History of Tadano Faun
FAUN is a German manufacturer of trucks and special vehicles, including truck cranes, from the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz, is a subsidiary of the Japanese joint-stock company Tadano, the full name is Tadano Faun GmbH. Tadano Faun traces its history back to 1845, from the Nuremberg foundry of J. H. Braun.
In the "Golden Age" of the company in the 70s, the company produced a large number of special ballast tractors and heavy aerodrome multi-axle fire trucks, which became the main specialization of the company. At the same time, great importance was attached to the development and small-scale production of mining dump trucks and multi-axle crane chassis, where FAUN occupied a special niche in the market, and this helped it maintain its independence for a long time. In the early 80s of the last century, the company carried out, within the framework of large construction projects in the USSR, large contracts for the supply of heavy trucks, tractors and tugs. One of the most interesting objects shown in the photo is a heavy four-wheel drive three-axle truck tractor FAUN HZ 40.45 / 45. In the photo, the tractor is paired with a high-profile Schoerle semi-trailer. Moreover, the semitrailer has a design created for a tractor, taking into account the cross-country ability, saddle height, and carrying capacity.
This road train as part of a tractor and a semitrailer forms an off-road conveyor used in the USSR for a variety of important jobs. Basically, the FAUN HZ 40.45 / 45 tractor was used for the construction and maintenance of gas and oil trunk lines. The tractor and semitrailer were also used to transport heavy machinery, equipment, pipes. Thanks to the built-in cable traction winches made by ITAG M181 and the ability to pull immobilized equipment onto the trawl platform, the road train was used as a heavy tow truck for trucks, crawler bulldozers, excavators, pipelayers.
The FAUN HZ 40.45 / 45 6x6 heavy-duty semitrailer tractor is a bonneted four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with a Deutz 12L 413F air-cooled diesel engine with a displacement of 19 liters and a power of 455 hp. The engine has a long history and has been sold in the USSR, including for trucks manufactured by Magirus. The power unit has a simple and reliable cooling system, which gave great advantages in the harsh cold. The power unit paired with the transmission provides the heavy tractor with extremely high traction characteristics, while ensuring reliability and the possibility of operating a fully loaded road train in difficult conditions. For the distribution of torque, the classic scheme with a central location of the transfer case from ZF FAUN VG 20-3 is used. At the heart of the FAUN heavy truck tractor is a powerful steel frame made of two high-strength spars. A feature of the FAUN technique is not only a unique design, but also its own production of heavy, highly loaded continuous-type axles, which are used on a tractor. At the same time, the first FAUN Front Axle wheel axle with onboard planetary gearboxes and a permissible load of 12 tons. The rear axles are combined into a balancer with a load capacity of 40 tons. That allows, with the curb weight, to have a total weight of the tractor of more than 50 tons on three axles. Standard tires are large, have a dimension of 26.5 R25, with a tread width of about 700 mm and a diameter of 1750 mm. Large diameter and contact area endow the tractor with high adhesion properties, and increase the ground clearance up to 500 mm.
Semi-trailer heavy duty Schoerle with a carrying capacity at all speeds of 70 tons, can be used to transport oversized cargo weighing up to 100 tons at low speeds. The peculiarity of the heavy-duty trawl is that the semitrailer has a design created for operation in conjunction with a FAUN 6x6 tractor, for operation as a transporter of heavy loads and equipment, in the most difficult road and climatic conditions. Schoerle heavy-duty trawls are used to transport oversized, heavy and indivisible cargo, heavy bulldozers, excavators, truck cranes, both on public roads and on rough terrain, including category V at ambient temperatures from -60 ° to + 60 ° Celsius. To realize high off-road capabilities, the semi-trailer has a high-mounted frame, a high hitching point of the pin with the counterpart of the tractor, a powerful frame structure using special large-size tires 18.00 R25
